Team and permissions

Who can open the dashboard, who can decide reports, admin and moderator roles, and how every check works.

3 min read

Modhelm does not have its own user accounts. Access follows your Discord server: the roles and permissions a member has there decide what they can do in the dashboard and in the bot. There is nothing to invite or to keep in sync.

The two levels

LevelWhoCan do
AdminThe server owner, members with Administrator or Manage Server, and members with one of your admin rolesEverything: settings, games and API keys, white label, billing, team, data export and deletion, plus everything a moderator can do, and changing decisions
ModeratorMembers with one of your moderator rolesReports, players, notes, bans, unban requests, review mode

Members without any of these see nothing of the server in the dashboard and cannot use the decision buttons or the moderation commands.

Set the roles

  1. Open Settings > Team & API.
  2. Pick one or more Admin roles and one or more Moderator roles.
  3. Save.

A role that is in both lists gets admin access. The server owner and everyone with Administrator or Manage Server always have admin access, no matter what the lists say.

How the check works

  • The dashboard checks your Discord permissions on every request. If someone loses a role in Discord, their dashboard access ends immediately.
  • Bot buttons and commands check the roles of the member who clicked, not the roles of the person who posted the card.
  • A member who manages several servers sees all of them in the server picker and gets the level that applies on each server.
  • Cross-game bans check your permissions on every target server at the moment of the ban. See Decisions.

Who can accept the terms

Only admins who have Administrator or Manage Server on the Discord server can accept the Terms of Service and the data processing agreement. A role from the admin list is not enough for that, because accepting binds the server operator.

Commands by level

CommandEveryoneModeratorAdmin
/report, /appeal, /verify, /unverify, /help✓✓✓
/lookup, /case, /ban, /unban, /note, /dashboard✓✓
/setup, /language, /premium✓

The buttons under report and unban request cards need the moderator level. Change decision on a decided report needs the admin level.

Staff of the moderation service

If you booked the moderation service, our staff decides open reports through their own panel. They do not get access to your dashboard, your settings or your unban requests. Their decisions are marked as "Moderation service" in cards and in the audit log. See Moderation service.

Support access

When you ask us for help with a problem in your dashboard, a member of our support team may need to look at your server's data. Such access needs a reason, is limited in time and shows up in your audit log as a staff entry, so you always know when it happened.

Audit log

Audit in the dashboard lists every action with who did it and when: decisions, unbans, notes, setting changes, key checks, token creation, erasures and panel posts. You can filter by action. Entries are kept 14 days on Free, 90 days on Pro and 365 days on White Label.

Personal security

The dashboard sign in runs through Discord, so your Discord account's security is your dashboard's security. Turn on two factor authentication in Discord for every admin, and do not share accounts. Sessions expire after seven days and can be ended at any time with Sign out.

When someone leaves the team

Remove the Discord role. That is all. Their dashboard access ends with the next request, their notes and decisions stay in the history with their name, and nothing has to be transferred.
