AutoMod and moderation commands

Presets, checks and steps of the AutoMod module, Discord's own AutoMod rules, the test box, and the commands /warn, /timeout, /kick, /discordban, /slowmode, /lock, /unlock and /modlog.

4 min read

The AutoMod module deletes scams, slurs and spam on your Discord server and warns, times out or kicks members by steps you set. You find it in the sidebar under Modules > AutoMod. Only admins can open it. White label bots use the same module with their own bot.

Turning it on

AutoMod starts switched off. The switch at the top turns it on with the Light preset: scams, IP grabbers, slurs, invites, mass mentions and flood. The overview suggests this step until you chose something on the page.

Pick a preset under Preset:

  • Off: nothing is checked, and Modhelm removes its own Discord rules.
  • Light: scams, slurs and obvious spam. Nothing a normal chat trips over.
  • Normal: the usual rules, links to unknown domains and capital letters included.
  • Strict: tight limits, timeouts from the first hit and a kick at the fourth hit.

A preset fills every check, the steps and Discord's own filters. Your word lists, allow lists and exemptions stay. You can change everything after; the page then shows Custom.

Checks and steps

Every check has a switch, an action, its limits, a card in the log channel and its own exempt roles and channels. The actions are Only log, Delete, Delete and warn, Delete and follow the steps and Delete and kick.

The steps decide what follows a hit within the time window: a warning first, then growing timeouts (the last one repeats), and optionally a kick at a set hit. Scams and IP grabbers skip the warning. With Tell members by DM the member gets a short DM with the rule.

The owner, members with Administrator or Manage Server and your team roles from Team and permissions are never checked.

What works without the message text

Discord does not give Modhelm's bot the text of messages (the Message Content intent). So AutoMod works in two ways:

  • Discord's own rules: the word lists with your extra and removed words, Discord's word lists, the spam filter and mention spam become Discord AutoMod rules. Discord blocks those messages itself, and the bot follows with your steps and the card.
  • The bot: flood and mass mentions work from what Discord always sends.

Checks that need the text (links, invites, scams, repeats, emojis, capitals, zalgo, walls of text) say so in their row. The test box still shows what they would catch.

Discord rules on your server

Discord allows 6 word rules per server. The list shows every rule with its owner: Modhelm, another bot or a person, and how many word rules are used.

  • Adopt lets Modhelm add your allow list and exemptions to a rule of someone else. Nothing is deleted.
  • Replace moves the words of the ticked rules into Modhelm's rule and then deletes them in Discord. It needs a confirmation that names every rule.

Rules of people or other bots are never deleted without that confirmation. Read rules only reads, Sync now brings Discord in line with your settings. The bot needs Manage Server for this.

Test a message

Paste a text under Test a message to see which check or Discord rule would catch it and what would happen. Nothing is posted or stored.

Moderation commands

Your team can moderate in Discord with these commands. Each one needs Modhelm moderator access and Discord's own permission for the action, and every action needs a reason.

CommandWhat it doesDiscord permission
/warnWarns a member by DMnone
/timeoutTimes a member out, off ends itModerate Members
/kickKicks a memberKick Members
/discordbanBans a Discord account (/ban is the Roblox ban)Ban Members
/purgeDeletes the last messages of a channelManage Messages
/slowmodeSets the slowmode of the channel, off ends itManage Channels
/lock and /unlockLocks the channel for members and opens it againManage Channels
/modlogShows the warnings, timeouts, kicks and bans of a membernone

Moderators can't act against team members with the same or more rights, the owner, bots, or members whose highest role is at or above theirs or the bot's. Every action is written to the audit log and goes to the log channel unless Actions made in Discord is off on the channels page. With Log and send the person a DM there (see Channels and roles) the member also gets a DM. /warn always sends a DM unless you set dm to no.
