Channels and roles
Choose where the bot posts reports, unban requests, logs and the verification panel, and which roles it uses.
3 min read
The bot posts in four places and works with a handful of roles. All of it is configured under Settings > Channels & roles in the dashboard. Dashboard access itself is handled under Settings > Team & API, see Team and permissions.
Channels
| Channel | Who should see it | What appears there |
|---|---|---|
| Reports channel | Your team only | Every new report as a card with the buttons Ban, Acquit and Note |
| Unban requests channel | Your team only | Every unban request with the player's statement, the ban, priors and evidence |
| Log channel | Your team only | One short entry per ban, unban, acquittal, key problem and setting change made by the bot |
| Verification channel | Everyone | The verification panel with the verify button |
You can use the same channel for reports and unban requests, but most teams keep them apart so nothing gets lost.
Set the channels
- Open Settings > Channels & roles.
- Pick a text channel for each row. The list only shows channels the bot can see and write in.
- Save.
Channel permissions the bot needs
In each of these channels the bot needs View Channel, Send Messages, Embed Links and Attach Files. In the reports channel it also needs Read Message History, so it can update a card after a decision.
If a permission is missing, the bot cannot post the card. It writes "The bot may not post in #channel" to the log channel, or to the audit log if the log channel is the problem.
Roles
| Role | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Verified role | Members get it after verification. Required for verification to do anything. |
| Unverified role | Optional. Removed after verification, for example to hide channels until someone verifies. |
| Role to notify about new reports | Optional. Mentioned above every new report card. |
| Admin roles and Moderator roles | Decide who can open the dashboard and press the decision buttons. Set under Team & API. |
Role hierarchy
Discord only lets a bot give or remove roles that are below the bot's own role in the role list. Open Server Settings > Roles in Discord and drag the Modhelm role above the verified and unverified roles. Otherwise the log channel shows "The bot needs the Manage Roles permission, and its role has to be above the verified role."
The same applies to nicknames: the bot can only rename members whose highest role is below its own, and it can never rename the server owner.
Panels
Panels are messages with a button that members use instead of typing a command.
- Verification panel: posted in the verification channel. The button opens the verification page.
- Report panel: posted in a public channel. The button opens the same form as
/report. - Unban request panel: posted in a channel banned players can still see. The button starts an unban request.
To post them, go to Settings > Channels & roles, choose the public channel for the report and unban request panels and click Post all panels. Panels that already exist are updated in place instead of posted again. You can also post each panel on its own from the Verification, Reports and Appeals settings pages.
Notifications for new reports
If you pick a role under Role to notify about new reports, the bot mentions it above each new card. Use a role with few members, for example "On duty", so people are not pinged for every report at night.
Server language
Cards, panels, log entries and direct messages use the server language from Settings > General. Ephemeral replies, the short messages only one person sees, use that person's Discord language if Modhelm supports it. See Languages.
Changing channels later
You can change any channel at any time. Existing cards stay where they were posted and remain usable. New reports go to the new channel. When you change the verification channel, post the verification panel again so the button lives in the right place.
