Portal and custom domain

Your public page for reports, unban requests and verification, with branding, your own legal pages and your own domain through a CNAME and a TXT record.

4 min read

The portal is the web side of Modhelm for your players. It lives at modhelm.com/g/<your-slug> and, with the White Label plan, on your own domain. Players use it to report, to request an unban, to verify and to see what data is stored about them.

Pages in the portal

PageAddressPurpose
Start/g/<slug>Your branding, welcome text and links to the three actions
Report/g/<slug>/reportReport a player with video, pictures and links
Unban request/g/<slug>/appealSign in with Roblox and Discord, send a request
Status/g/<slug>/status/<id>State of one unban request
Verify/g/<slug>/verifyVerification for this server
Privacy notice/g/<slug>/privacyGenerated notice for players with your contact details
Player terms/g/<slug>/termsThe rules players accept when they use the portal
My data/g/<slug>/meWhat is stored about the signed in player

On your own domain the same pages live at the root, for example appeals.yourgame.com/report. There, /privacy and /terms show the pages you linked under Legal pages, and the portal's own player terms move to /rules.

Portal address

Under Settings > Portal you choose the slug: 3 to 32 lowercase letters, digits and hyphens. The page tells you right away whether it is free. Changing the slug changes the links in your panels, so post the panels again afterwards.

Branding

Branding is included from the Pro plan. You can set:

  • a display name shown instead of the server name,
  • a logo (square) and a banner (ideally 1600 × 500 pixels), uploaded or linked,
  • an accent color for buttons and highlights,
  • a welcome text,
  • a Discord invite and a website link.

The portal footer shows "Powered by Modhelm" unless you turned it off with the White Label plan.

You run the portal for your community, so you are the operator and the controller for the data players enter there. Modhelm processes that data on your behalf. The footer therefore has to show your imprint and your privacy policy. Enter the links under Settings > Portal > Legal pages, together with a contact email for players who have questions about their data.

The generated privacy notice at /privacy explains in plain words what the portal does with data. It links to your full policy and names you as the controller. You still need your own policy; the notice does not replace it.

Custom domain

With the White Label plan you can run the portal on a domain or subdomain you own, for example appeals.yourgame.com. Addresses under modhelm.com cannot be used.

Set it up

  1. In the dashboard, open White label > Custom domain, enter the domain and click Add domain. The page shows two DNS records.
  2. At your DNS provider, add both:
Text
Type Name Value
CNAME appeals.yourgame.com custom.modhelm.com
TXT _modhelm.appeals.yourgame.com <the token shown in the dashboard>
  1. Wait a few minutes, sometimes a few hours, then click Check DNS. The page shows which record was found.
  2. When both records are visible and your legal links are set, the domain becomes Active. The certificate is created automatically on the first visit, so the very first page load can take a few seconds.

DNS details

  • The CNAME points traffic to Modhelm. If your provider does not allow a CNAME on the name you chose, an A record with the address that custom.modhelm.com resolves to works as well.
  • The TXT record proves that you control the domain. Keep it in place; it is checked again from time to time.
  • If you use Cloudflare, set the record to DNS only (grey cloud). A proxied record (orange cloud) breaks the certificate. If you must proxy, use SSL mode Full (strict), never Flexible, and make sure /.well-known/acme-challenge/ is not redirected.
  • The domain is checked for ownership, so one domain can only be used by one server.

After activation

  • The panels and direct messages link to your domain.
  • Verification on your domain uses your own Discord application if you connected a white label bot, see White label. Without one, it still works through Modhelm's application.
  • Removing the domain under White label sends players back to the modhelm.com address. Existing links to your domain stop working.

Player terms and your rules

The portal comes with player terms that explain what players agree to when they report, appeal or verify. Your own game rules and appeal rules belong on your website or in a rules channel; link them under Settings > Portal so they appear in the footer. Publishing them helps a lot: Roblox expects creators to publish their rules and to allow appeals, and players accept decisions better when the rules were visible before.

Language

The portal follows the visitor's browser language, with a switcher at the bottom of every page. Addresses never contain a language code, so a link works for everyone. See Languages.
